All this in opera red and black scenery, the colors of desire and death. In less than two minutes, the whole idea of the film is outlined. "
Few of those now writing about Brisso drew attention to the obvious parallels in Sound and Fury and Secret Passions. In particular, the similarity of otherworldly intrusions into intrigue.
Jean-Claude Brissot:
"Secret Passion" - this is the same "Sound and Rage" only with women, with sex. And in that, and in another film, a ghost appears, but it has a different meaning. In Sound and Fury, it can be assumed that the woman in white replaces the absent mother for the boy. At the same time, it can be considered as an image symbolizing the transition from life to death, from one world to another. Or maybe it's a real ghost manipulating a boy. All these interpretations do not contradict each other, they can be brought together. In "Secret Passions" the second meaning comes to the forefront - the transition from one world to another. Christophe defies death, wants to compete with her. The girl playing the ghost is the same Natalie giving Christophe everything he wants. It represents for me something vague and romantic, symbolizes the passion that arises between these characters. And the bird accompanying the ghost is obviously associated with Greek tragedies.
There is a very strong sexual element in Secret Passions, although sex is not the main thing in the plot. In general, the plots of The Secret Passions and Sound and Rage are the same. I made this film because I realized that so far no one has managed to transfer sex to the screen in the same way that Hitchcock suffered fear and violence. I_m probably going to shoot another film where sex will either play the role of a poetic element, or an element of suspense, or maybe all together. And then I_ll make two films - I won_t say that they are more conventional, but there will be no sex in them at all.
